Standard 6 Reflection
Social Studies- Safety in National Parks
Artifact Description
I presented a lesson on safety in National Parks, describing what rules and regulations are. I talked about the purpose of these rules and how they can vary from park to park. Through class discussions, we talked about why different parks had different rules/regulations. I had each table, which typically had 4 students, think of 5-10 rules/regulations that could be applied to Olga Brener Woods. I chose Olga Brener Woods because it was a familiar place for the students and it was in their community. Once the groups had their list I had them choose their top two rules/regulations. We then combined the rules to make a class list.
Alignment Reflection
This artifact is aligned with the INTASC Standard 6: Assessment. This artifact fits this standard because I was able to design an applicable and engaging informal assessment for the students to see if they are grasping the concept of rules/regulations. I was able to see if students were struggling and other peers or I could aid them. As a class, students would work together to help everyone comprehend the idea of different safety rules/regulations through class discussion. Even though a class list has been produced, I still had each table submit their group list of their rules/regulations.
Personal Reflection
Through this teaching experience I learned there are many ways that are effective but yet the students are actively engaged. Using this assessment the children enjoyed working as a group and thinking of their own rules/regulations for a familiar place in their community. Throughout this lesson I was able to use formal and informal assessment. I have found out that I prefer multiple ways to assess my students rather than using tests.
