Standard 10 Reflection
College 4 Kids
Artifact Description
During the school year of 2014-2015 the teacher education department of College of Menominee Nation put together Family Engagement events for college students and their families. The college was putting these events on through a grant; the goal was to encourage families to incorporate literacy into their daily lives. Many of the education classes were assigned different dates to participate and facilitate the events. The Saturday morning workshops titled College 4 Kids had different themes and was geared to children aged birth-eight. The Saturday sessions had different activities, read aloud, finger plays and other similar activities for the children. Once the spring semester started, the families were all sent home with books for their children as an incentive to complete each area of interest! The following week of the Saturday sessions there were also “lunch and learns” which was focused to CMN student parents. These were different seminars that touched a variety of resources for parents.
Alignment Reflection
This artifact is aligned with INTASC standard 10: Leadership and Collaboration. This artifact follows this standard because as a pre-service student, I helped collaborate with colleagues, other school professionals and families to make College 4 Kids possible. Teacher education students worked with learners and their families to support literacy development. Facilitating and helping with this event is aligned in leadership and collaboration because it is showing how we worked as a team to make these events possible. We are engaging with families and interacting with students to improve the literacy instruction they have at home.
Personal Reflection
Throughout the school year, I attend all of the Saturday workshops but two; I facilitated 3 and assisted wherever I was needed throughout the remainder. I was fortunately lucky enough to attend a few of the lunch and learn sessions which were interesting because there were multiple topics discussed. I am glad I was able to work with other students and families to help grow and develop the literacy within their homes.
